Safely Detecting Device Coupling using Reversed RF Polarization and Pre-Spoiled EPI

چکیده
Purpose: Patients with many types of common implants, including pacemakers and neurostimulators, are ineligible for MR scans due to the potential for tissue heating arising from RF coupling between the excitation field and their device. The severity of this coupling can be detected by reversing the RF polarization in the birdcage RF receiver. Ideally, this results in MR signal only around coupled structures within the excitation volume. To exploit this effect for implant safety assessment, total RF power must be kept under a safe limit even in the case of maximum coupling. Here, we show that a four-shot projection EPI image of the region containing the implant can be used safely given some reasonable assumptions. Furthermore, robustness can be improved by adding a pre-spoiler gradient that effectively suppresses signal imperfections due to electrodynamic effects while minimally affecting the desired signal.

Detecting Unsafe Device Coupling using Reversed RF Polarization
Purpose: Patients with many types of common implants, including pacemakers and neurostimulators, are ineligible for MR scans due to the potential for tissue heating arising from RF coupling between the excitation field and their device. We propose a method for detecting this coupling by reversing the RF polarization in a birdcage coil. This produces strong MR signal around any coupled structure...
متن کاملComments on "Ensuring safety of implanted devices under MRI using reversed polarization".
In the work titled ‘‘Ensuring Safety of Implanted Devices Under MRI Using Reversed RF Polarization,’’ the authors propose a method based on reversed polarization, which can be used as a prescan technique for patients with implants. In their work, to visualize qualitatively the induced radiofrequency (RF) currents on a metallic lead inside the patient, they propose to reverse the RF polarization...
متن کاملElimination of Inflow Enhancement by Partial Pre-Saturation in RF Spoiled Imaging
Introduction: For RF-spoiled gradient echo imaging (ie SPGR, FLASH, T1-FFE), the combination of spoiling gradients and quadratic phase cycling eliminates net transverse magnetization within a voxel [1-4] to enable pure T1 contrast. Generally, many RF excitations are required to attain steady state magnetization levels. Therefore, when unsaturated spins are flowing into the imaging volume, inflo...
متن کاملOn the synchronization of transcranial magnetic stimulation and functional echo-planar imaging.
PURPOSE To minimize artifacts in echo-planar imaging (EPI) of human brain function introduced by simultaneous transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). MATERIALS AND METHODS Distortions due to TMS pulses (0.25 msec, 2.0 T) were studied at 2.0 T before and during EPI. RESULTS Best results were obtained if both the EPI section orientation and the frequency-encoding gradient were parallel to th...
متن کاملA Novel Catheter Tracking Method Using Reversed Polarization
INTRODUCTION: Accurate visualization of guidewires and catheters during a vascular intervention(1,2) procedure is critically important. With this aim, many tracking techniques have been developed. Automatic identification of the position of the catheter in passive tracking techniques(3) is difficult, but in active catheter tracking techniques(1,2,4), it is possible to obtain a catheter and back...
